Inon Announces ZD Front Mask for Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

If you want to use your action camera with Inon’s latest wet lenses—the UFL-GR140 ZD/UFL-GR140 Pro ZD and UFL-G140 ZD semi-fisheye lenses, and the UCL-G55 ZD, UCL-G100 ZD and UCL-G165II ZD close-up lenses—you’ll need their latest ZD Front Mask, which attaches to your action cam’s waterproof case.

INON also releases the 4D Light Grip in late September, which can be mounted onto the housings of various action cameras. This highly versatile grip allows users to attach both an action camera and a light at the same time.

(*1) Lens hoods included with UFL-GR140 ZD shipped before Augst 5, 2025 may be visible in footage. Please use the updated “Lens Hood II (for UFL-GR140)” which is available for separate purchase.

  • Nauticam Announces Housing for Nikon Z5 II

Nauticam Announces Housing for Nikon Z5 II

Nauticam has unveiled their NA-Z5II housing for the new Nikon Z5 II, the second iteration of the Japanese company’s entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera. The Z5 II features a 24MP backside-illuminated sensor paired with Nikon’s latest EXPEED 7 processing engine, promising class-leading low-light performance and 11fps continuous shooting with the manual shutter (up from just 4.5fps on the Z5). On the video side, the Z5 II can shoot both 4K/30p and Full HD/120p with no crop.

Designed to accommodate both Z-mount lenses and F-mount lenses (via the FTZ/FTZ II adapter), Nauticam’s housing features important controls ergonomically positioned next to the integrated handles. As you’d expect, there’s full compatibility with Nauticam’s extensive range of water-contact optics, such as the FCP-1, WWL-C, SMC-3, CMC-2, and MFO-3. Both optical and electrical flash triggering options are available, while the M16 port allows the installation of an HDMI bulkhead for use with monitor/recorders such as the Atomos Ninja V or monitors such as the new Nauticam T7 HD UltraBright.

The NA-Z5II is priced at $3,800 and can be pre-ordered now from retailers such as Backscatter.

    PRODUCT INFORMATION

    INTRODUCING NA-Z5II

    The Nikon Z5II Camera

The Nikon Z5II, a refinement of its predecessor, boasts enhanced processing speed, subject recognition autofocus, and exceptional low-light performance. Equipped with a full-frame FX-format 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 7 image processor, the Z5II delivers remarkable image quality.

The AI-driven autofocus, derived from the Z9 and enhanced by deep learning technology, now employs sophisticated Subject Detection for nine distinct subject types. This ensures precise focus and tracking, even in challenging lighting conditions.

The EXPEED 7 processor also enables Pre-Release Capture, a feature that captures up to one second prior to shutter release at an impressive 30 frames per second. This allows photographers to capture the precise moment and avoid missed shots.

In addition to its impressive imaging capabilities, the Z5II has been enhanced to deliver exceptional video recording performance. It supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 60 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, enabling videographers to capture dynamic and immersive footage.

    Key Features

    • 24.5MP Full-frame BSI-CMOS Sensor
    • EXPEED 7 Image Processor
    • N-RAW (12 bit), H.265/HEVC (8 bit/10 bit), H.264/AVC (8 bit)
    • Full HD 120p for Slow Motion Video
    • Up to 30 fps JPEG Shooting
    • Class-leading autofocus detection down to –10EV
    • Automatic detection of 9 subjects
    • 7.5 stops of built-inimage stabilization
    • 2 SD Memory Card Slots

    THE NA-Z5II HOUSING

The NA-Z5II underwater housing upholds Nauticam’s dedication to innovation. Essential controls are conveniently accessible via ergonomic handles, facilitating an efficient setup that optimizes time spent in the water and minimizes time spent on rig maintenance. The N120 port system accommodates both Nikon Z Mount and legacy F Mount lenses via the FTZ/FTZ II adapter. Nauticam’s extensive range of ports and in-house corrective optics complement the NA-Z5II’s capabilities. When equipped with an accessory vacuum valve, the integrated vacuum check and leak detection system provides continuous updates on the housing’s watertight integrity. A vacuum system reset switch, located beneath the tray, eliminates the necessity to open the back of the housing during lens or port changes. The optional NA-Z5II LCD window for Full Frame viewfinders enables the utilization of Nauticam Full Frame viewfinders for enhanced viewing. The NA-Z5II is capable of supporting additional mounting with 1/4-20, M10, and M5 holes on the top for monitors and lighting, while the bottom accepts the 25218 Tripod Mounting Ball set. The NA-Z5II is ready for customization to meet your specific shooting requirements.

    Nikon F-Mount & Z-Mount Lens Support

The Nauticam NA-Z5II is designed to accomodate both Z-Mount and F-Mount lenses. With the new compact design of the NA-Z5II housing, there are newly released zoom and focus gears that will drive off the main zoom/focus knob on the housing. There is also the 22225 N120 FTZ Adapter ER 25 with Knob which will allow you to use previous generation Z-Mount zoom and focus gear along with F-Mount lenses and their corresponding gears. For complete compatibility details, you can view the NA-Z6III/Z5II Port Chart.

    Premium Professional Optics

Nauticam’s professional water-contact optics deliver the highest underwater image quality. The FCP, WACP, and WWL lines enhance wide-angle, while the MFO and SMC offer exceptional macro and super macro capabilities. The EMWL allows you to shoot macro, wide-angle, or combine the styles for unique images.

    Mission Control

In true Nauticam fashion, essential controls are placed as close to the handles as possible, making these housings the most intuitive and user-friendly available. Our engineers strategically position controls where they’re needed most, rather than simply near the corresponding buttons on the camera. Dials feature rubberized finger grooves, and levers are designed for smooth operation.

Integrated Vacuum Check & Leak Detection Electronics

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system is shipped with NA-Z50II as standard equipment. Combined with an optional accessory vacuum valve (PN 25625), this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

    Flash Triggering

Flash triggering on the Nikon Z5Il in the NA-Z5II is available via either optical or electrical triggering.

    Optical Triggering

    • 26350 Flash Trigger for Nikon (Compatible with NA-D5/D500/D850)

  • Solitude World Announces New Underwater Photo Competition in 2026: REAL FOCUS

Solitude World Announces New Underwater Photo Competition in 2026: REAL FOCUS

Our friends at Solitude World—who run Solitude Acacia Resort, Solitude Lembeh Resort, as well as three liveaboards, including the recently launched Solitude Gaia—have unveiled an interesting new underwater photography competition centered around their resorts in Anilao and Lembeh.

Called Real Focus, the competition will be run at the two popular muck-diving destinations over a 10-week period from February 15th to April 30th, 2026. Each image captured during that time and submitted into the contest will additionally become a “valuable scientific datapoint,” contributing to a species behaviour study led by well-known marine biologist Dr David Harasti (who is a skilled underwater photographer in his own right). The work culminates in a research paper aimed at better understanding marine life in Anilao and Lembeh.

Entrants that book the minimum three-night stay are permitted to submit up to five images in each of four categories—and entrants can, of course, book multiple stays over the 10 weeks. As you’d expect, there’s a special emphasis on macro photographers practicing ethical behavior, and dive guides will act as spotters only and not be allowed to provide any photographic assistance.

For more information about the shootout, head over to the competition page on the Solitude World website.

    PRESS RELEASE

Solitude World Blazes the Trail with Groundbreaking Underwater Photo Competition: REAL FOCUS

A New Era of Underwater Photo Competitions

Solitude World is once again blazing the trail—not just in travel, but in how we interact with the underwater world. Introducing a one-of-a-kind photo competition that spans two of the world’s muck diving capitals: Anilao, Philippines and Lembeh, Indonesia. REAL FOCUS is a groundbreaking event that isn’t just about the perfect shot—it’s about scientific contribution, conscious diving, and meaningful change.

    Why This Is Groundbreaking

This revolutionary competition will run simultaneously in two iconic muck diving locations—Anilao and Lembeh—positioned almost perfectly along the same longitude. Over 10 weeks, REAL FOCUS offers an unprecedented opportunity to study marine species in parallel environments. By collecting image data under near-identical conditions—such as moon phase, depth, and water temperature—the competition generates a neutral, geographically unbiased dataset.

This data feeds directly into a dedicated three-year species behaviour study led by Dr Dave Harasti, a globally recognised marine biologist. Every submitted image becomes more than an entry—it’s a valuable scientific datapoint. Together, these contributions will support a peer-reviewed research paper and help deepen our understanding of marine life dynamics in two of the world’s most biodiverse underwater ecosystems.

“This was a concept I’ve been exploring for years. I wanted Solitude World to create an event with purpose, to go beyond just a photo competition,” says Andrew Lok, Managing Director of Solitude World. “We are the only ones in the world with bases in two of the best muck destinations, why not take advantage of that?” he continues.

    Event Details: Everyone Can Join

    Dates: February 15 – April 30, 2026

Locations: Solitude Acacia Resort (Anilao) and Solitude Lembeh Resort (Indonesia)

    Eligibility: minimum 3-night stay required

    General Rules

    • Book as many stays as you like
    • For each 3-night stay, participants may submit up to five (5) entries in each of the four (4) categories
    • No dive guide assistance during shooting (guides will act only as spotters)

Participants must follow a strict code of ethical conduct. Any harmful behaviour, such as touching, chasing, staging, or manipulating marine life, will result in all submissions for that day being disqualified. Entries may resume the next day with a renewed commitment to responsible practices.

This initiative promotes conscious photography, proving that impactful images can be captured without interference, fostering a deeper respect for the ocean and its creatures.

The REAL FOCUS: Contribution Over Competition

At its core, this isn’t about competition. It’s about contribution.

Every image submitted becomes part of a larger mission: a 3-year species behaviour study spearheaded by Dr Dave Harasti, a globally recognised marine biologist. Your shots will directly feed into a research paper aimed at better understanding marine life across both dive sites.

And this isn’t just about the prizes. It’s about changing underwater behaviour, encouraging photographers to hone their craft without touching, staging or manipulating marine life. Stunning images can—and should—come from respectful, natural interactions.

    Gathering the Tribe

This project has been two years in the making. Our partners will be #makrogehtimmer, a Facebook group created in 2023, that is a growing community of nearly 5,000 underwater photography enthusiasts dedicated to ethical macro photography.

To ensure the integrity of this event, the judging panel was selected for their 100% advocacy for changing how we shoot underwater.

    Panel of Judges

    • Dr. Georg Nies (Germany) – Head of Jury
    • Lilian Koh (Singapore)
    • Imran Ahmad (Malaysia)
    • Ram Yoro (Philippines)
    • Dr Alex Tattersall (United Kingdom)

Judging will be conducted live and anonymously, ensuring a purely merit-based review with no indication of the photographer’s identity or the Solitude resort/location where the images were captured.

  • Isotta Announces First Housing for Smartphones

Isotta Announces First Housing for Smartphones

Isotta has unveiled its new anodized aluminum housing for smartphones—a first for the Italian company. Isotta tells us that the single image on their website shows the prototype, but given the finish, it looks to be very close to the final product. We can expect full product shots in the coming weeks. According to the new phone’s spec sheet, the housing is “compatible with any phone model currently on the market” and can be fitted with “an adjustable mount for additional lenses.”

Like many smartphone housings, connection to your phone is via Bluetooth, so you won’t need a special app to make use of the housing’s hardware controls for basic operation. The picture of the prototype doesn’t reveal much about those hardware controls, but the spec sheet intriguingly states that there’s a “joystick for cursor control.” What is clearly visible is Isotta’s signature single-handed open/close knob, but the spec sheet notes that the back of the housing is “completely detachable” from the front.

Also of note is that the housing features a compartment for a rechargeable 21700 battery—which presumably explains the housing’s prominent bulge—and there’s a USB-C socket for charging. The battery is designed to keep your phone juiced for longer and it may well also power the built-in “moisture sensor with LED indicator.” The housing is also ready to receive a vacuum system, but this is an optional extra.

Shipping in mid-September, Isotta’s smartphone housing can be pre-ordered from Backscatter now. Final surprise: The housing isn’t only available in “Isotta red”—there’s a black version, too.

Young Shark Photographer of the Year 2025 – Panitbhand Paribatra Na Ayudhya

Today, July 14th, is Shark Awarenews Day, and what better way to celebrate the planet’s charismatic elasmobranchs than revealing the winners of the 2025 Shark Photographer of the Year photo competition? UK-based charity Shark Trust bestowed the honor upon Julian Hebestreit for a lovely shot of a leopard shark cruising the waters of Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Panitbhand Paribatra Na Ayudhya was named Young Shark Photographer of the Year for a beautifully executed image of a whale shark feeding at the surface in the Maldives.

Other winners included “British Isles” winner Hector Clarke and “Overseas” winner Martin Broen. In addition, a number of categories were aligned with various conservation programs and projects that the Shark Trust is currently undertaking. • Synology Announces DiskStation DS1825+ and DS725+ NAS Systems

Synology Announces DiskStation DS1825+ and DS725+ NAS Systems

Synology has unveiled two additions to its DiskStation lineup—the DS725+ and DS1825+—which offer two and eight drive bays, respectively. The new 25 Plus series models offer 2.5GbE networking, support SATA SSDs and HDDs (both 2.5″ and 3.5″), and feature M.2 NVMe slots for use as cache.

Like the DS925+ and DS1525+, the new models can be upgraded with the company’s DX525 expansion unit. You can add a single expansion unit to the DS725+ or two expansion units to the DS1825+. Calculated using 20TB drives, you get up to 40TB of storage with the DS725+ or 140TB with added expansion; and up to 160TB with the DS1825+ or an impressive 360TB with the added expansion. That’s a serious number of photos and videos!

One caveat to consider when investing in these new 25 Plus series models is that Synology says complete functionality will only be available with Synology-branded drives—a proviso that the company says ensures the most reliable performance. This isn’t a huge deal if you’re using HDD drives, since Synology’s drives are competitively priced, but if you want to go the solid-state route, Synology SDDs are rather expensive compared to those of its competitors. (Non-certified drives can technically be used in the new NAS systems, but users that choose to do so will lose certain software- and firmware-related functionality.)

The Synology DS725+ and DS1825+ will retail for $520 and $1,150, respectively—yes, that’s without any storage drives!

    Synology’s DiskStation 25-series includes the DS425+, DS725+, DS925+, DS1825+, and DS1525+

    The Nauticam NA-C400 Underwater Housing

The Nauticam NA-C400 is a professional underwater aluminum housing that builds on Nauticam’s extensive cinema housing lineup. The NA-C400 features the large N120 port opening shared with other Canon RF and EF-mount cameras such as the R5II and R5C. This allows for the use of identical lens and port combinations when using a combination of RF-mount Canon cameras on a project with Nauticam housings.

    Mission Control

Nauticam engineers obsess over placing essential controls where they are needed most so you never miss a shot looking for a button, dial or lever. Nauticam’s cinema lineup features large cinema-style lens control dials for precise control of focus and zoom. Exposure and capture controls are placed within easy reach of the ergonomic handles.

In addition to mechanical controls for Power, Zoom, Focus and Lens Release, the NA-C400 features electronic controls at the rear, and both sides of the housing through the camera’s remote functionality. The left handle adjacent controls are for ‘Up’, ‘Down’, ‘ISO+’, and ‘ISO-‘. Right handle adjacent controls are for ‘Rec’, ‘Fn3’, ‘Fn4’, ‘IRIS+’ and ‘IRIS-‘. The main control board accesses ‘Left’, ‘Right’, ‘Up’, ‘Down’, ‘Set’, ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘Set’, ‘MENU/REC Review’.

    LCD Monitor Support

The C400 features a detachable LCD screen that can be easily integrated into the NA-C400. The LCD monitor is supported inside the housing and is mounted at the rear of the camera with a supplied bracket that allows it to be easily viewed underwater through the shaded rear window making for a streamlined filming solution.

    HMDI/SDI

The NA-C400 supports Nauticam’s optional HDMI 2.0 and 1.4 system that can accommodate external monitors or recorders in Nauticam housings. SDI output is also available for either surface monitoring or supported monitors. The NA-C400 has 1 M28 and 5 M16 bulkheads to accommodate a variety of configurations to suit mounted or remote setups.

    Battery

The NA-C400 can accommodate either the BP-A30N or BP-A60N batteries or a combination of the BP-A30N and an FXLION NANO THREE 150Wh Micro V-Mount battery for extended runtimes.
