    Godox Has Announced Ultra Compact Affordable Flash – The New iT20/iT22


    Godox, a company popularly known for photography lighting equipment, has recently released a couple of mini TTL flashes – the Godox iT20 and iT22, that are ultra compact and will easily fit into your pocket. These camera flashes are perfect for both indoor and outdoor photography use, and come with magnetic accessories for quick switching between light effects.

    The mini flashes are almost identical with the iT20 slightly smaller than the iT22 and come in an ultra compact design and weigh only 45g (iT20) and 52g (iT22), which means they can be carried in your pocket, ready to be grabbed and used when needed. There is a dedicated button that allows the user to toggle between manual and TTL modes. Real time settings are displayed, so one can view them for any adjustments required.

    The accessories that come with the flash like the light spreader or diffuser and two color filters, are all magnetic, so they can be easily snapped on to the flash when required. There are also other optional accessories that can be purchased, like diffuser, gels and honeycomb grids which are magnetic. These accessories help with capturing creative and atmospheric effects in your photograph.

    The flash intensity can be adjusted across 6 stops in steps of 1/3. The recycling time for the flashes is 1.5s at full power and a single charge lasts more than 700 flashes. The built-in lithium battery can be charged quickly (approximately 1h 10mins) with a USB-C cable.

    Another optional accessory is the “Hot Shoe Riser” that helps to lift the flash by 30mm, so it has clear spread of light without blockage, when using wide angle or long lenses. There is also a 0 – 90 degrees tilt adjustment that helps to bounce light off the flash when required.

    The flash is compatible with Canon E-TTL II, Nikon i-TTL, Sony, Fujifilm, OM System and Panasonic TTL systems, supporting both auto flash and High-Speed sync functions. More details about the flash can be found here.

    Retra Announces Flash Pro Max II



    Retra has announced a new version of its top-of-the-line strobe—the Flash Pro Max II. The fifth-generation strobe—coming two years after the fourth-generation Flash Pro Max, Flash Prime+ and Flash Pure—improves on its predecessor in key areas, according to Retra.

    First, as you might have guessed, it’s significantly more powerful, packing 190 Watt-seconds (Ws) of output, up from the 140Ws of the Pro Max. Retra says that translates to “65% more actual light output” because the new strobe features a redesigned reflector, “optimized” power handling, and a better triggering system, where less energy is lost to heat. According to the company, recycle times have been improved by 25%, and at “low” power settings, it’s possible to shoot continuously at up to 60fps.

    Other aspects have been improved, too: The target light is twice as bright as before (1,000 lumens as opposed to 500 lumens), the power dial now offers 17 positions (instead of 13), and the strobe even starts up faster. As previously, the battery compartment accepts four AA batteries as standard, plus an additional four AAs when the Booster is added, but the strobe, battery cap and Booster all now boast gold-plated contacts. Retra says you’ll get up to 2,000 flashes at 25% power using the 8×AA configuration.

    If all that wasn’t enough, Retra are sweetening the deal for their launch offer: If you pre-order now, you’ll get a Booster and two USB chargers free of charge.     The Star Wars Lightsaber was based on a camera flash handle


    We love when nerdy things collide here at Pop Photo, and that is precisely what happened with the creation of perhaps the most iconic movie prop of all time. As the video below from DigitalRev In-Focus explains, George Lucas wanted the props in the Star Wars films to look used in order to suggest a sense of history. He didn’t want shiny new objects in his films. They also had a very limited budget when filming those initial movies. The low budget required they get scrappy—literally—in how they created props.

    As a result, set decorator Roger Christian would browse antique and junk stores for items to use as props. He was in a tiny camera store in London’s West End and asked if they had anything that he might find interesting. The owner took out a dusty box of antique camera goods, which included a 1940s Graflex camera with a three-cell flash gun. A lightbulb went off for Christian. The flash handle became the base for Luke’s lightsaber.

    It took only a few modifications to create the legendary weapon. The actual “blade” portion of the weapon involved painting a tube with blue projector material and adding a light, which made it glow. Luke’s was one of two lightsabers that Christian designed. The entire thing took only $15 to build, though it sold in 2012 for $250,000. That makes it one of the most expensive movie weapon props ever sold. It even beats out Ghostbusters props. And that number is likely even higher now since it was featured so prominently in Episode 7.

    Of course, there is a downside to cameras becoming pieces of sci-fi legend. Camera collectors have had difficulty getting their hands on Graflex flash handles since so many were bought by Star Wars prop collectors and cut up to become lightsabers. A genuine original Graflex can cost thousands of dollars at this point. And camera collectors say that valuable antiques are getting destroyed in the process. Whether you agree that history is being destroyed or are all about your genuine lightsaber props, we think this clash of photography and pop culture history is a fun one.
