    Shark-topus might sound like the name of a corny sci-fi flick: But it’s actually what many are calling a bizarre behavior captured by scientists of an octopus hitching a ride on a Mako shark.

    Researchers from the University of Auckland used a drone camera to film the unlikely duo—a Maori octopus and mako shark—cruising through the ocean off New Zealand’s coast. It appears to be the first documented case of such a commensurate behavior between the two species.

    “The shark seemed quite happy, and the octopus seemed quite happy,” Dr. Rochelle Constantine, the maritime ecologist who captured the footage, told NYTimes.com. “It was a very calm scene.”

    The real mystery lies in how the unlikely duo met. Mako sharks swim up to 40 miles per hour in the open ocean, while Maori octopuses live on the sea floor. It’s unknown how long the shark-topus was together or if they remain connected by the fin and tentacle, erm, arm.

    Either way, it’s one tenta-cool rider.

    Canon is working on a new technology that utilizes their CMOS Dual Pixel sensors to seamlessly generate 3D images, according to PetaPixel.com.

    The project is coded as “3D photo technology” and aims to transform current tech familiar to Canon shooters: Dual Pixel. In essence, the sensor divides each sensor into two photodiodes (traditionally used to simultaneously achieve autofocus and image capture).

    In the case of this new tech, the Dual Pixel sensors capture two of the same images from slightly different positions. Combined with Canon’s current RAW software and upcoming 3D photo tech, users can view an almost VR photo map of an entire scene—all from a single shot.

    There are some kinks to workout—apparently, mirrored surfaces and transparent objects present challenges—but check out the impressive demonstration from the recent CP+ show as shared with PetaPixel.

    Underwater360 Group, the organizers of the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) have announced the winners of the show’s signature photo/video/art competition, ADEX Voice of the Ocean. The big winner was Filipino shooter PJ Aristorenas, whose stunning image “Tentacles of Doom” was crowned “Best of Show” during the live judging session held on the final day of the three-day show.     DPG is thrilled to announce the second edition of the Underwater Awards Australasia—the premier underwater imaging competition focused on the Australasian region. Like the hugely successful inaugural edition, the 2025 competition is a three-way collaboration between the long-established Underwater Australasia, DPG, and underwater imaging equipment and dive gear distributor UW Images.

    Like last year, the competition will culminate in an exhibition at the Go Diving Show ANZ in Sydney, Australia, in September. Once again, the exhibition will feature stunning metal prints of the finalist entries by Printing Partner PhotoMart, which will be available for purchase. Half the proceeds from print sales will go to Environmental Partners Australian Marine Conservation Society and Take 3 for the Sea.

    The prizes, worth more than A$50,000 in total, include dive trips with the world’s top resorts and liveaboards, as well as the latest underwater photo and video gear. Entrants compete for prizes in 9 categories, including the unique “Reels Showcase” video category. The top image or video among the category winners receives the distinction of “Best of Show.” This year’s prestigious judging panel comprises photo judges Tobias Friedrich, Jayne Jenkins, Matty Smith, Tanya Houppermans, Scott Portelli and William Tan; and video judges Philip Hamilton and Ross Long.

    The competition calls for passionate underwater shooters from around the world to submit their most captivating and compelling images and videos from the Australasian region. Shooters are invited to immerse themselves in the challenge of capturing the essence of this extraordinary realm, where every frame tells a story of the delicate balance and breathtaking beauty that characterises our oceans.

    The competition opens on June 1 and closes on July 20, 2025.     Backscatter is getting into the fluroresence photography and video game with the latest accessories for its Hybrid Flash and Macro Video 4300—the new Backscatter Hybrid Flash Fluorescence Excitation Filter and Backscatter Video Light Fluorescence Excitation Filter, respectively.     Insta360 has announced its latest 360-degree camera—the Insta360 X5. While the year-old X4 introduced 8K/30p 360-degree video, the X5 promises to deliver 8K recording at much higher quality due to its larger Type 1/1.28 sensors and Triple AI Chip system. That’s a significant difference in sensor area: The 1/1.28-inch sensors are 144% larger than the 1/2-inch ones used in the X4. The X5’s f/2 lens has an equivalent focal length of 6mm, compared to the 6.7mm equivalent focal length of the X4’s f/1.9 lens. While Insta360 says the X5 is the “toughest 360-degree camera ever”—the X5’s lenses use new ultra-durable glass—the camera features a replaceable lens system, making it possible to swap out damaged lenses on the go.

    The fresh sensors and processor have resulted in new recording modes. While the camera captures 8K/30p 360-degree video like its predecessor, 5.7K/60p is now available (vs 30p on the X4), as is 4K/120p (vs 100p on the X4). The X5 tops out at 4K/60p when shooting single-lens video. You can also use the X5 to shoot 72-megapixel stills (9504×4752 pixels), recorded to RAW DNG files. Out of the box, the X5 is waterproof to 15 meters (~50 feet)—a 5-meter (~16-foot) improvement over the X4—but serious underwater shooters will want to put the X5 in the dedicated Invisible Dive Case, which extends the depth rating to 60 meters (~200 feet). Battery life has also been extended: The X5 is good for three hours as opposed to the two-and-a-bit of the X4.

    The Insta360 X5 is available now as the “Standard Bundle” for $550. There are various other bundles available, such as the $700 “Invisible Dive Bundle,” which includes an Invisible Dive Case, Invisible Selfie Stick, Floating Hand Grip and Selfie Stick Wrist Strap.

    Perhaps two of the most exciting pro-level cameras on the market at the moment are Sony’s a1 Mark II and a9 Mark III. The a9 III remains the only full-frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter, giving you jaw-dropping specs like blackout-free continuous shooting at 120fps with AF, no-crop 4K/120p video, and the ability to sync with flash at up to 1/80,000s.     The a1 II and a9 III share a body which makes the NA-a1ii housing possible without any adapters, modifications or loss of features.  Both cameras also share the incredible 9.4M-dot electronic viewfinder from the A7RV.  

    THE NA-α1II HOUSING

    The NA-α1II Housing is based on the Nauticam NA-a9III housing and can accommodate both the Sony a1II and a9III camera bodies with no adapters of modifications. This truly makes this housing one of the ultimate underwater imaging tools able to capture high resolution as well as low-light stills and high resolution, low-noise and high-framerate video.


    Mission Control

    The driving force behind Nauticam housings is to place controls where they should be, within easy reach of the ergonomic handles for an intuitive and smooth underwater filming experience. The NA-α1II features a dual action thumb lever on near the right handle that actuates the ‘AF-ON’ and ‘REC’ buttons. Near the left handle is a thumb lever for ‘PLAYBACK’. The shutter release, main and sub command dials are also all within easy reach without taking your hands off the handles.


    Professional Optics

    The NA-α1II housing is built around the N100 port opening allowing for a wide variety of optics solutions from extreme wide-angle to super macro. In addition to supporting traditional wide angle dome port and macro flat-port configurations, the NA-α1II can support much of Nauticam’s range of Water Contact Optics from the Fisheye Conversion Port (FCP) to the Extended Macro Wide Lens (EMWL). To truly unlock the creative possibilities of these two cameras, pairing them with either the WACP-1B, WACP-C or WWL-1B gives impressive 130º rectilinear field-of-view, ~0″ minimum focus distance, full zoom through capabilities and the incredible corner sharpness. If more coverage is needed, the FCP provides 170º fisheye coverage with full zoom through and close focus capabilities. Take your macro imaging to the next level with either increased 2.3X magnification with the new SMC-3 close-up lens or the wide-angle macro look of the EMWL 160º lens.

    EVF Enhancement

    Both the Sony α1II and α9 III feature the same ultra-high resolution 9.4M-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF).  To truly take full advantage of this underwater consider pairing it with one of the Nauticam Enhanced 0.8:1 Viewfinders.  These underwater viewfinders are designed to give full edge-to-edge magnified viewing and include a diopter that can be adjusted underwater to match your vision.

     


    HDMI 2.0

    A large bore M24 bulkhead is located at the front of the housing for use with HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4 (with a step-down adapter to M16) external monitors and recorders.  An additional M10 threaded mounting position near the front center of the housing also makes using an external monitor even easier.


    Vacuum Check and Leak Detection

    The housing comes with electronics pre-installed for Nauticam’s Vacuum Check and Leak Detection system, requiring only the optional M14 Vacuum Valve (25624). This monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.


    Strobe Triggering

    Triggering of external strobes is accomplished via the integrated fiber-optic bulkheads when using the optional Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302).  Electronic triggering is also available via an optional Nikonos or Ikelite Style Bulkhead.

    After many years of producing housings for monitors, including the Atomos Shinobi II and SmallHD Ultra 5, Nauticam has now released its own monitor—contained in an integrated housing. Featuring a 7-inch UltraBright panel with 1920×1080 resolution, the monitor offers a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, according to Nauticam. That’s brighter than any currently available monitor for underwater work, promising to make it possible to shoot in even the sunniest conditions.

    The monitor offers a slew of advanced video assist tools, including customizable aspect ratios, false color, focus assist, focus peaking, histograms, image flip, vector scope, waveforms, zebra stripes, and anamorphic de-squeeze (to correct the distortion created by anamorphic lenses). Rather than a standard ball mount, the monitor comes with a newly designed swivel-and-tilt mount, which is attached to a housing via two ¼’’-20 UNC screws.

    Depth-rated to 100 meters (330 feet), the monitor comes in two flavors: The T7 offers a single HDMI 1.4 input, while the G7 supports both HDMI 1.4 and SDI inputs. The G7 also offers an SDI output for connecting to a monitor on the surface. Both varieties are powered by four Li-ion rechargeable batteries, with the latest NightCore NL2160HP 6000mah batteries providing up to six hours of use at the default backlight level.
